Following the Franco-Prussian War, the original version of this sculpture was created by artist Antonin Mercie to honor fallen French soldiers. The war hero's broken sword is a sign of defeat, but the winged female is depicted carrying him to glory. 'Gloria Victis' means 'glory to the vanquished.'
